Jan Kristufek (1824-1913)

This is a fully sourced timeline for Jan Kristufek, son of Matej Krystufek and Lidmilla Krejci of Talin, South Bohemia, from the time of the birth of his wife in 1823 to the time of his death in 1913. 1823    Jun 7th. Anna Jelinek born in Kloub, Bohemia to unwed mother Barbara Jelinek of Kloub 10. (Source: Czech DigitalArchives 1849 Marriage Records)

1865    John Kristufek listed as a grocer at corner of DeKoven and Desplaines and John Kristufek     (probably Jr.) listed as laborer at 173 DeKoven (Source: 1865 City Directory)

1867    Mary Amelia Kristufek marries Frank Krch. Frank Krch listed at 171 DeKoven address in   1867 Chicago City Directory. Frank and Mary Krch move to Minnesota.

1868    November 16. John Jr. marries Mary Bedlan. Son Frank is born in 1869. (Source: FamilySearch.org member submission, 1870 Census)

1870    June 29th. John Christopher, a saloon keeper, is living in the 9th Ward of Chicago with wife Annie, and children: Annie, Katie, “Jane” and Joseph. Also at the address: son John with wife Mary and son Frank. (Source: 1870 Census)

Son John Kristufek listed as cigar maker working for Daniels & Baum and living at 171 DeKoven.

1871    Great Chicago Fire begins at 137 DeKoven, one block down from 171. Fire spreads North.

1875    Son John is listed as a cigar maker and son Joseph listed as working in a laundry, both at 487 S. Canal Street. Daughter Katie (under name Catherine Christopher) is also listed at that address as a milliner. (Source: 1875 City Directory)

October 26th. Daughter Kate Kristufek marries Frank Gross. (Source: Cook Co. Marriage Index)

1877     October 31. Daughter Jennie (listed as Antonia J. Kristufek) marries Frank Lepsa in Minnesota. His parents, Jacob and Mary, own a grocery store there.

1880    June 4th. John Sr., house owner, is living at 487 S. Canal Street with wife Ann and son Joseph. Also at that address: John Jr., a cigar maker, with wife Mary and children: Edward, John, Charles, Frank, George and Annie. June 12th. Daughter Anna and husband Vaclav (listed as James) are living with daughter Maladah “Millie” at 202 Centre Avenue. (Source: 1880 Census)

1881     July 8th. Wife Anna JelinekKristufek, overcome by the heat, dies of Cholera at 487 S. Canal Street. (Source: Anna Kristufek death record)

1882     Daughter Jennie’s husband Frank Lepsa is listed as a Secretary for the Pioneer Lodge No. 25 for the CSPS in Wahoo, Nebraska. (Source: Omaha Bee Newspaper)

1885    June 9th. Daughter Kate is living with husband Frank Gross, children Sylvia and John, along with John Sr.’s son Joseph in Wahoo City, Nebraska. Also living there are Daughter Jennie and husband Frank J. Lepsa. Frank Gross is working as a brewer, Lepsa as a bottler and Lepsa’s brother Thomas a boilermaker. Joseph is listed as a cigar maker but he has also spent two of the months of the year unemployed.

1886    Joseph and Mary live in New York City for four years and have first two children there,  Joseph Jr. (January 14, 1887) and Sylvia (August 10, 1888). 

1890    Joseph listed as cigarmaker at 951 Washington Ave. in New York City. (Source: 1890 NYC Directory)

Son Joseph moves back to Chicago later in 1890, has son Robert there on August 18, 1891.

1894    9 Nov. Omaha Daily Bee reports on election results. Republican Frank Lepsa loses to Democrat and People’s Independent candidate Mr. Vanhousen for the 26th District for the state house.

1895     March 23. Mary Bedlan Kristufek awakes to the sound of a barking dog alerting her to two     intruders trying to break into the saloon below the house at 487 Canal Street. (Source: Daily Inter Ocean Newspaper under Kristufeck)

1896       June 4th. John Jr.’s wife Mary Bedlan dies. (Source: Cook County Death Index)

1897    January 27th. Jennie’s husband Frank Lepsa commits suicide in Wahoo, Nebraska after selling his interest in a local bank. (Source: Nebraska newspaper articles)

In his will, Frank Lepsa leaves $9000 to various charities in Bohemia including: $4000 for poor school children in Trebon near Branna in South Bohemia and $1000 to a library there as well. 3 Sept. Jennie Kristufek Lepsa of Wahoo, Nebraska marries Frank Boehm, a cigar store owner in Cheyenne, Wyoming who grew up across the street from Jennie at 162 DeKoven where his family still resides in 1897. (Source: Denver Rocky Mountain News)

1899    Janurary 22nd. Jennie Kristufek Lepsa, now Antonia Boehm, settles for $3500 and allows balance of Frank Lepsa’s estate to go to various Bohemian charities. (Source: Jan Habenicht, The History of Czechs In America, 1910)

April 20th. Antonia “Jennie” Kristufek gets fast divorce from Frank Boehm after claiming he choked her. In addition to her recent settlement with her first husband’s estate, she also receives $1800 in alimony from Frank Boehm (Source: Salt Lake Herald)

April 30th. Frank Boehm puts his Cheyenne cigar store up for sale and returns to Chicago. (Source: Denver Rocky Mountain News classified ad)

Jennie Kristufek relocates to Denver as Antoinette Boehm and buys a boarding house. (Source: 1900 Census)

1900    June 2nd. John Sr., a landlord, is living with son John Jr., a saloon keeper, and John Jr.’s  children George (a cigar maker), Ida, Joseph and Mamie at 487 S. Canal Street. Also living at this address: Granddaughter Annie with husband George Beresheim with children Annie, Ruth and George Jr. as well as grandson Edward and wife Mary with children Edward and Arthur.

June 2nd. Son Joseph, a feed dealer, is living with wife Mary and children Joseph Jr., Sylvia, Robert, Ella and Henry at 1915 W. 47th Street.

June 7th. Daughter Katie is living with husband Frank Gross and children Sylvia and Georgia in Wahoo City, Nebraska.

June 9th. Daughter Anna and husband Vaclav Donat as well as children Millie, Edward, Joseph, Jerry, Ella, Anna and Sylvia are listed at 576 W. 19th Street. (Source: 1900 Census)

US Census lists Antonia Boehm as a rooming house keeper at 1624 Welton (The Lester) with lodger Phyllis Boehm (most likely daughter of Thomas Lepsa, Frank’s brother, and his wife Barbara Kalina) in Denver, Colorado. (Source: 1900 Census)

4 Dec. Denver Rocky Mountain News reports death of Frank Boehm of Cheyenne with headline “Dies Insane.”

1903    20 Aug. Jennie Kristufek now known as “Antoinette Boehm” marries Alfred R. Davies in Colorado Springs, CO.

1906    November 28th. Sylvia Kristufek, daughter of Joseph Kristufek marries her first cousin Frank Kirk, son of Mary Amelia Kristufek. (Source: Cook County Marriage Index)

1910    April 19th. John Sr. is living with granddaughter Annie and her husband George Beresheim (and their children Annie, George and Charles) at 1134 S. Canal Street. Also living at the address are John Jr. and John Jr.’s son George.

April 19th.  Daughter Anna and husband Vaclav, a soda water manufacturer, are living with children Edward (chemist), Jerry (bottler), Ella (shoe saleslady), Anna (bookkeeper) and Sylvia (apprentice dressmaker) at 1529 W. 19th Street.

April 28th. Son Joseph, a saloon proprietor, and wife Mary are living with children Joseph Jr. (a railsman clerk), Robert (bookkeeper), Henry, Ella, Adeline, and George at 1300 W. 50th Street. (Source: 1910 Census)

April 21st. Daughter Katie and husband Frank Gross are living in Wahoo City, Nebraska with children John and Georgia.

US Census finds Alfred R. Davies, clerk, with his wife Antoinette, born in Illinois, parents from Bohemia, who had one child who is no longer living, and an adopted 19 year old niece Phyllis Boehm living at 2510 Welton in Denver.

1913    April 10th. John Jr., a retired saloon keeper, dies at 1429 S. 44th Street of cirrhosis of the liver (his address for the last six months of his life) and is buried at Bohemian National Cemetery. Section M, Block 3, Lot 17. (Source: Death Certificate, Cook County Death Index)

April 20th. John Sr. dies at 1134 S. Canal Street, the home of his granddaughter Annie Beresheim and is cremated at Montrose Crematory and buried, with his wife Anna Jelinek Kristufek at Bohemian National Cemetery. (Source: Death Certificate, Cook County Death Index)
